LAMP: Linux Apache MySQL Perl/PHP/Python
LAMP is an acronym for the Linux operating sytem, Apache webserver, MySQL database, and Perl/PHP/Python programming languages. These provide a powerful website that can have web software, web pages and images, and data-driven web applications.
LAMP is the industry standard for developing and deploying websites. LAMP has been in widespread use for many years and is highly secure, highly scalable, and highly reliable.
How to get LAMP?
Many hosting companies can provide servers with LAMP pre-installed so you can quickly set up a website. Some hosting companies can also provide dedicated servers with LAMP, and some can provide Virtual Private Servers (VPS) with LAMP.
Comparisons
LAMP is somewhat like the Microsoft web platform:
- Linux and Microsoft Windows Server are both operating systems
- Apache and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) are both webservers
- MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server are both databases
- Perl/PHP/Python and Microsoft C# are all programming languages
We use LAMP because:
- LAMP is proven more secure and more reliable
- More hosting companies provide LAMP servers
- There are more developers working on LAMP
- All the software is free and open source
